Home security and automation systems on the market today allow families a new level of connection to their homes that was not possible in the past. From a home that knows when you are about to pull into the driveway after a long day at work, to lowering your hydro bills.

  1. Watching Your Kids

Many families today need both parents to work, leaving children to come home to an empty house. With an automation and security system, you can get an alert on your phone when they leave in the morning and come home after school, or after curfew.

  1. Easier Mornings

Just by locking your door when you leave in the morning, you can signal your home to turn your lights off, lower your heat or air conditioning, shut off any connected appliances, and arm your security system.

  1. Easier Evenings

Your home system can even be programmed to do specific things based on where and how far away you are. Much like easier mornings in reverse, a home that senses when you’re getting close after a day at work can power everything up. You can walk in the door every night to a house at the perfect temperature, and a porch light always on for you.

  1. Lower Hydro bills

Remotely, turn off lights, outlets, and HVAC. As hydro costs go up, you can make sure that the energy you’re using to light, heat, cool, and otherwise power an empty house goes down.

  1. Safety in the home

For people who have a hard time seeing in low-light conditions, your program can be set with adjustable light bulbs to light a path during the night at less than full brightness to avoid stumbles and falls. For the elderly or people with disabilities using a medical alert fob, a monitoring station can be alerted to call emergency services, family notified, and the door unlocked for paramedics in the event of a medical emergency.

  1. Pets

Pets get too hot or too cold just like us. If the temperature rises or drops below a certain point you can adjust the thermostat from your phone. For older pets or pets with health problems, you can check their well-being on your phone using a remote camera. If you are not at home in the event of a fire a monitored smoke detector alerts the monitoring station to call the fire department, which could save your pet’s life.

  1. Reduce Damage to the Home

With sump pump, flood, smoke, and carbon monoxide sensors all being monitored 24/7 you know when something is wrong through your phone alerts. Emergency services can be called, water valves shut off, or action taken to keep your home, belongings, and pets safe.

  1. Access from Afar

Never worry if you left the lights on before going on vacation, or if you forgot to lock the front door. You can close your garage door from down the street, or open the door for your child who forgot their keys from across the city.

As home automation systems continue to develop and integrate with home security systems, more and more becomes possible. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to home automation. By talking to a professional about your unique needs, family, and situation, individual components are used to tailor a solution to your family and home that grows and changes as you do. But at the end of the day, it’s all about making your life safer, easier, and better.
